Example - West Midlands Hospital solves their request label issues with a portable printing solution

The requirement:

One of the largest hospitals in the West Midlands engaged Code Red via one of our solution partners in an effort to find a workable solution to  print pathology request labels quickly and simply wherever they were needed in the hospital. Traditionally, pathology request labels were filled in manually and this was time consuming, difficult for traceability and for clarity between operators.

How we solved the problem:

To solve this problem, the hospital decided to look for a way to print the necessary information from our central systems and attach it to the samples at the patients’ bedsides.

Our customer outlined the problem to us and we discussed a number of viable options for printing utilising both existing infra structure and with additional outlay, allowing the user to see a range of options at different levels of function, size and budget.

The user decided to work with Citizen CLS-521 direct thermal label printers which we sat on portable trolleys and connected to a laptop or PC. These units are

located around the hospital so that when a pathology label is required, staff can print it out quickly and simply with information extracted from the central database. As the laptop and printer are kept on the trolley and connected wirelessly to the central system, they can be moved around the hospital and used at the point of care, wherever they are required.

The verdict:

The end user said about the system "We are using about 90 of the printers across the hospital now and they have made things much more efficient. Any problem with printing a pathology label would be serious but everything is working wonderfully. Staff have commented on how much better the new automated labelling system  is; now, it’s hard to see how we managed before.”
